Have you heard of the Moonbeams Quilt Along? It is this year’s charity quilt along by Fat Quarter Shop to raise funds for Make A Wish! Every year, Fat Quarter Shop hosts a charity quilt along by giving away a free pattern each month to make a stunning final quilt. In an effort to raise funds for Make a Wish, however, Fat Quarter Shop does ask for a donation there in lieu of payment for the pattern.
This year, the Moonbeams quilt, was designed to use the Strawberry Lemonade fabric collection by Sherri and Chelsi. There is a quilt kit to accompany the quilt along that comes in a stunning storage box. Strawberry Lemonade is a beautiful fabric collection that has been very popular with quilters. However, this quilt can be made with any fabric collection, or even scraps from your stash!
Moonbeams Month 5 – Tree of Life Blocks
The Tree of Life blocks look really complex with all of its pieces, but as we’ve seen with this quilt along so far, it really only uses two basic quilt units to make up the larger block.
- Half Square Triangle Units
- Sew and Flip Corners
If we take a closer look at this quilt block we can see that it can be broken into 4 different pieces and make each section accordingly. The tree trunk section utilizes sew and flip corners to get the look of the trunk and then larger triangles to anchor the base and where it meets the “leaves”. The other three sections are just arrangements of half square triangles and solid squares to make the leaf pattern of the tree. Finally, I used long strips and corner posts to frame this block and make it the correct size needed for the final quilt.
Here is another look at these 2 Tree of Life blocks together. This month marks the final month of the larger quilt blocks. Next month we will be making the filler square in a square quilt blocks to use as borders in the final quilt.

Moonbeams – Companion Cross Stitch
The Moonbeams quilt along also has a companion cross stitch pattern. A free pattern is released each month that coordinates with the quilt along. This month, the upper right corner with four star blocks were stitched. As I was stitching, I decided that the called for pink floss was not showing up as well as I would have liked compared to the white floss. Therefore, I decided to change to Little Pink Peony by Classic Colorworks instead. I did pull out the few stitched from month 2 that were pink in the dove and replaced it with the Little Pink Peony and I like it so much better.
This is the last pattern release for the cross stitch. The final month includes the full free Moonbeams cross stitch pattern, so you only need to download this release if you’re just starting out. I love the way the final stitch looks and I’ve been on the lookout for a finishing piece that I love to fully finish it soon.
