It’s time to share my Barn Star Sampler block 9 from the Barn Star Sampler Quilt Along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt along uses the Barn Star Sampler book by Shelley Cavanna. All together there are 20 different blocks making up the final quilt. It’s a large quilt at 80.5″ x 100.5″. This is large enough to fit a queen sized bed and I think it would be easy to add some borders or additional blocks on the edges to increase it to a king size quilt if desired.

Block 9 is the Peony Star and finishes at 16″ x 16″. The final quilt needs two of these blocks. I am using the Renew and Spring Chicken fabric collections from Sweetwater Fabric Co. I used similar prints in each of the parts of the quilt block this month so they look very similar.
The Peony Star block is more complex looking than the last few month’s blocks, but still uses traditional piecing to make these complicated looking star blocks. The four corners are made up of 2 squares and 2 half square triangles to make a modified four patch. The outer middle portions are made up of square in a square blocks that are offset by rectangles to get them to the size that matches the corner pieces. A simple square of a contrasting color makes the center of the block.
This layout is a good example of how color placement combined with simple beginner piercing techniques can produce a block that appears much more complicated than it really is.
The two blocks look great together.
Next month we get into smaller 8″ x 8″ blocks. I have a lot of smaller pieces left over from the large blocks and am looking forward to using some of them up.
Have you gotten a copy of the Barn Star Sampler book yet? The blocks are beginner friendly and the other projects in addition to the sampler quilt would make a great addition to your quilt collection.
Happy quilting friends!
