Barn Star Sampler Blocks
This quilt along uses the Barn Star Sampler book by Shelley Cavanna. All together there are 20 different blocks making up the final quilt. It’s a large quilt at 80.5″ x 100.5″. This is large enough to fit a queen sized bed and I think it would be easy to add some borders or additional blocks on the edges to increase it to a king size quilt if desired.
This month in the quilt along we are making blocks 10-15. This is all of the 8″ blocks in the quilt along. Each of the blocks needs to made three times. This is a total of 18 quilt blocks to add to the final quilt. I kept each of the sets similar in some way.
Block 10 – The Ribbon Star
Block 10 is the Ribbon Star. This is a simple star block with a square in a square block for the center and star points made from flying geese.
Block 11 – The Mosaic Star
Block 11 is the Mosaic Star. Similar to the ribbon star it is a simple star block with a square in a square center and flying geese star points. What makes it different is that the corners are made with half square triangles instead of a single fabric square corner.
Block 12 – The Ohio Star
Block 12 is the Ohio Star. It is a variation of the classic Ohio star since it is inset into the block to make the star smaller than than the overall block. It is made with a solid square in the center and hourglass blocks surrounding the center to make the star points.
Block 13 – The Weathervane Star
The Weathervane Star is block 13. It uses simple sew and flip methods on different sizes of squares and rectangles to give the many points of the finished star block.
Block 14 – The Pinwheel Star
The next block in the lineup is the Pinwheel Star. I love the way this star looks. It is super simple assembly. Each quadrant is made up of a solid square, a half square triangle, and a rectangle that has the opposing corners sewn with sew and flip corners. Repeat this for all 4 quadrants, and you have a beautiful Pinwheel Star.
Block 15 – The Windmill Star
The final 8 inch block for the Barn Star Sampler is the Windmill Star. This block has 9 patch blocks in the corners and 3 patch quarter star triangles surrounding a square center. I also love the way that 3 patch quarter star triangles can be used to create a spiral appearance in a block with color placement.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my Barn Star Sampler Blocks 10-15. One more month of the quilt along is remaining. The rest of the blocks are all 4 inch square blocks. When those are complete, it will be time to start piecing the quilt top together!
Happy quilting friends!
