It’s time to share the eighth block in the Barn Star Sampler Quilt Along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt along uses the Barn Star Sampler book by Shelley Cavanna. All together there are 20 different blocks making up the final quilt. It’s a fairly large quilt at 80.5″ x 100.5″ and is large enough to fit a queen sized bed.

Block 8 is the Farmer’s Star and finishes at 16″ x 16″. The final quilt needs two of these blocks. I am using the Renew and Spring Chicken fabric collections from Sweetwater Fabric Co. Each month I select coordinating fabrics to make similar blocks with matching color placements.

The Farmer’s Star block is very similar to last month’s Friendship Star. It is made up of a center square in a square block that is surrounded by flying geese and an elongated flying geese, but instead of a four patch variation in the corners, block 8 has a nine patch variation for the corners.
The two blocks together coordinate well with the pink, green, yellow, and grey color scheme. The sew and flip corners for the flying geese, and square in a square is an easy technique combined with traditional piecing methods.
Next month in the Barn Star Sampler book quilt along is the last larger sized block. After that we get into 8″ x 8″ blocks which will help use up my smaller scraps that I’ve been creating.
Have you gotten a copy of the Barn Star Sampler book yet? The blocks are beginner friendly and the other projects in addition to the sampler quilt would make a great addition to your quilt collection.
Happy quilting friends!
