Moda Blockheads 5 started this past week! Who doesn’t need another quilt along? Well, this lady really doesn’t, but I’ve never done Blockheads before so I decided to give it a whirl.

Moda Blockheads is a quilt along put on by Moda Fabrics featuring different block pattern instructions each week for blocks designed by Moda designers to inspire quilters of all abilities and to introduce the different designers to us.
This year, Moda Blockheads 5 is going to be split into two parts. The first part runs from September 6 to November 15. There will be 9 blocks plus a bonus block. This gives quilters a chance to use the first blocks in a smaller project before Christmas time. The second part will run from January 3 thru July to make more blocks to give you a bigger quilt.
In years past, several designers have offered different setting options so that you can pick your favorite quilt layout. I expect the same for this years projects. This year’s blocks will be offering cutting directions for either 6″ or 12″ blocks.
My Moda Blockheads 5 Fabrics
In the spirit of using what I have on hand, I chose to use a fat quarter bundle of Songbook that I had from Fancy That Design House that I had use a few bits out of. My hope is that in the final Blockheads 5 quilt I can use some of the printed panel pieces that I also have. For the background print, I wanted to use something a little different than my normal white solids. So I purchased a few yards of a blue floral print from the Songbook, A New Page collection.
Moda Blockheads 5 Kickoff Week
For the kickoff week, Moda shared a pattern for a bonus block called “Autograph Star” designed by Barbara Groves of Me & My Sister Designs.
This block can go on the back of your quilt if desired. It will give you a place to put your label or fill out with your name and information with a Pigma Micron Pen.
Blockheads Block 1
Block 1 is the Bright Star designed by Betsy Chutchian. I have decided to make 12 inch quilt blocks for this quilt along to have a larger quilt. Also, some of the blocks, like this one, will have a lot of pieces. For my sanity, since I’m working with small blocks for Lisa Bongean’s Twilight Stars quilt along, I will go with bigger blocks on this one.
This block is made up of a LOT of half square triangles. No worries, I have Triangles on a Roll! I needed 2.5″ triangle paper for this block so that the pieces will be 2″ finished.

One change I did make to the block is instead of using four 2.5″ squares for the center, I cut one piece at 4.5″ square so that I wouldn’t have seams going through the floral print.
By using triangle paper for precise half square triangles and taking my time, the block came together super well. I love this for the first block and am excited to see what next week’s design is.
