The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. Moda fabrics has split Blockheads 5 into two parts. Part 1 will be a shorter quilt along to allow for a project to be finished before the holidays. After the first of the year, the quilt along will resume with more blocks for a second project that will be larger quilt setting with the remaining blocks. I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House.
Moda Blockheads 5 Block 5 Assembly
The Southern Star is a modified 9 patch quilt block. It uses a simple sew and flip corner method to give the appearance of a star block. To do a sew and flip, you simply sew a smaller square onto the corner of a larger square. Trim the seam allowance back to 1/4″ and flip the corner open and press.
For this block, all 9 pieces of the nine patch gets sew and flip corners on two opposite corners. This is where color placement comes into play. By rearranging which color corners go where, you can change the look of the block to make a whole new look. I stuck to the original pattern layout by putting teal corners on the center star, and cream corners everywhere else.

I was really pleased with how well my points lined up on the block. Pressing well between each step is very helpful to achieve crisp and precise points. When working with the bias seams, like you have on sew and flip corners, I first gently press the seam back with my fingers and then press the iron straight down on the seam. No pushing or moving the iron. Just pressing the heat straight down.
Until next week, happy quilting!
