This week, Moda Blockheads 5 Block 6 is the Celeste block. The block is designed by Laurie Simpson of Minick & Simpson. Minick & Simpson design classic fabric lines for Moda and often have beautiful patriotic fabric lines.

The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. Moda fabrics has split Blockheads 5 into two parts. Part 1 will be a shorter quilt along with 9 quilt blocks plus 1 bonus block. This will allow for a project to be finished before the holidays. After the first of the year, the quilt along will resume with more blocks for a second project that will be larger quilt setting with the remaining blocks. I am using the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House.
Moda Blockheads 5 Block 6 Assembly
The Celeste block is made with a large center square in a square block. This block is then surrounded by 2 hourglass blocks on each side and solid fabric in the corners.
This block is very easy to get a different look by changing the positions of the fabrics in the hour glass blocks. I chose to use three different fabrics to make my hourglass blocks instead of just 2.
Hourglass blocks are very simple to make because it’s easy to oversize the block slightly and then trim down to the precise size needed.
Celeste Block
This block is very beginner friendly with the instructions that are provided by Moda. It uses two basic fundamental quilt blocks: the square in a square block and the hourglass block. Playing with your fabric placement will get you a variety of looks. I actually made a happy mistake and the colors didn’t end up like I originally planned, but it worked out just fine!
Moda Blockheads 5 Progress
My quilt blocks are looking really good. They are pretty different from what I normally make with the navy background giving them a much darker color way. They also look scrappier than I normally made because the fabrics are mainly small scale busy prints, but I like it for a change! At this point, I am planning to use sashing of some kind to break the blocks up a bit in the final setting.
Until next week, happy quilting!
