This week, Moda Blockheads 5 Block 7 is the Summer Star block. The block is designed by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life. Sherri designs fabric for Moda along side her daughter Chelsi Stratton. The two also host a fabulous podcast every other week on YouTube or on your favorite podcast platform. I love listening to their podcast!

The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. Moda fabrics has split Blockheads 5 into two parts. Part 1 will be a shorter quilt along with 9 quilt blocks plus 1 bonus block. This will allow for a project to be finished before the holidays. After the first of the year, the quilt along will resume with more blocks for a second project that will be larger quilt setting with the remaining blocks.
Moda Blockheads 5 Block 7 Assembly
The Summer Star block is made up of 6 flying geese and 4 half square triangle blocks. To make the 12 inch block, I was able to use 3.5″ x 6.5″ flying geese paper from Fat Quarter Shop to make perfect flying geese.
To attain the look indicated by the pattern, I had to pay special attention to the fabric placement of the “wings” on the center two flying geese.
The flying geese paper made my block come out with perfect points that matched up so easy. I did press some of my seams open to deal with the bulk in certain areas.
Summer Star Block
This block was super easy. Using the two at a time method of making half square triangles, I was able to trim down the corner units to the precise size. The foundation paper made the flying geese units come out perfectly. If, however, you choose not to use foundation paper, that’s completely fine! Flying geese are made with 2 sew and flip squares on top of a rectangle base.
Until next week, happy quilting!
