This week, Moda Blockheads 5 Block 8 is the Community Star block. The block is designed by Robin Pickens. Robin is well known for her beautiful hand-drawn floral prints and her blender line “Thatched“. I have used Thatched on several quilts including as a 108″ backing which is the perfect backing that gives just a little extra textured appearance over a solid backing.

The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. Moda fabrics has split Blockheads 5 into two parts. Part 1 will be a shorter quilt along with 9 quilt blocks plus 1 bonus block. This will allow for a project to be finished before the holidays. After the first of the year, the quilt along will resume with more blocks for a second project that will be larger quilt setting with the remaining blocks. For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House.
Moda Blockheads 5 Block 8 Assembly
The Community Star block is made up of a LOT of pieces. The pattern calls for 61 pieces in the final quilt block. However, none of the techniques are difficult if you take your time. The 12″ quilt block size will be far easier to handle just because of all the seams this block has. But the 6″ is certainly doable. I would HIGHLY recommend pressing all of your seams open if you are making the 6″ blocks.
The block utilizes a modified 9 patch in the corners with rectangles, squares, and half square triangles to attain the appearance of the 9 patch. There are also square in a square blocks on all sides of the block. These can be a little trickier, but if you piece it carefully, you are able to trim the block down to the proper size with ease.

Playing with color placement can really make this block have a lot of interest. Due to the amount of pieces in the block, I opted to only use 3 fabrics in my block. The appearance of half stars on the edges of the block really makes me interested in assembling several of these blocks into a table runner. The formation of secondary stars would be really interesting in a larger piece. Moda does include a coloring page with the free PDF quilt block pattern. I didn’t print my pattern though, so I just quickly sketched it out on paper and colored where I wanted the various fabrics to go.
Moda Blockheads 5 Progress
I am so pleased with the colors of the quilt blocks with the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. I am anxious to figure out the setting I want to used for the Blockheads 5 Phase 1 quilt project.
There is just one more week of the first phase of Moda Blockheads 5. Until next week, happy quilting!
