Deb Strain designed a cute Ohio Star quilt block for block 9 of the Blockheads quilt along. I adore the fabrics Deb designs, especially the honey bee prints! My son raised honey bees for a few years and we currently have a hive on our property!
The Ohio Star is a classic block in quilting. It’s super simple to make too! Made up in a 9 patch arrangement, you need 5 squares of fabric and 4 hour glass squares. Color placement can be changed up to make the block have different focal points. For my block I made the triangles closest to the center all the same so that it has a square in a square look. I kept the outer most triangle the same as my background fabric to help the blocks in the final quilt flow together with the same background print.

Hour glass blocks are super simple to make. It helps to make them slightly oversized and then trim down. When in doubt, add 1/4″ to your starting square measurements to make sure they are large enough to trim down. Using the center intersection as a guide, it’s easy to trim them to the exact size.

I love the simplicity of the Ohio Star block. It is such a traditional block that you will find time and again in quilting designs.
