As I reach Month 7 of the Moonbeams quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop, the focus shifts from piecing the front to creating a pieced backing that complements the quilt top beautifully. This month, I tackled the unique pieced backing layout, which features a stunning combination of star quilt blocks and a hexagon Grandmother’s Flower Garden print from the Strawberry Lemonade fabric collection by Sherri and Chelsi. This month’s photos aren’t my finest work. I was in a hurry to get it on the longarm to see the finished product LOL. The final reveal will be better. Promise.

Have you heard of the Moonbeams Quilt Along? It is this year’s charity quilt along by Fat Quarter Shop to raise funds for Make A Wish! Every year, Fat Quarter Shop hosts a charity quilt along by giving away a free pattern each month to make a stunning final quilt. In an effort to raise funds for Make a Wish, however, Fat Quarter Shop does ask for a donation there in lieu of payment for the pattern.
Moonbeams Month 7 – Constructing the Pieced Backing
I began by constructing three star quilt blocks, each one featuring vibrant fabrics that echo the colors from the quilt top. These stars were offset by fabric strips, creating a striking horizontal stripe across the middle of the backing. This design brings an added layer of interest and balance to the quilt’s overall look.
Using a Cheater Fabric
To complete the backing, I used a 60″ cheater panel featuring a Grandmother’s Flower Garden hexagon print. The instructions guided me to cut the panel in half. I attached one half to the top of the star block stripe and the other half to the bottom, effectively framing the pieced stars and giving the backing a charming, cohesive look.

Finishing Touches
After piecing the backing, I added a quilt label from the Sweetwater Label Club to finish it off. I’m excited to see how it looks when the quilt is fully assembled. I love how the backing reflects the same thoughtful attention to detail as the front of the quilt, adding depth and personality to the entire project.
