Barn Star Sampler Blocks
This quilt along uses the Barn Star Sampler book by Shelley Cavanna. All together there are 20 different blocks making up the final quilt. It’s a large quilt at 80.5″ x 100.5″. This is large enough to fit a queen sized bed and I think it would be easy to add some borders or additional blocks on the edges to increase it to a king size quilt if desired.
This month in the quilt along we are making blocks 16-20. These are 4″ square blocks so they are perfect to use up the little scraps that remain after making the larger blocks earlier in the quilt along. Each of the blocks needs to made four times. This is a total of 20 quilt blocks to add to the final quilt. I kept each of the sets similar in some way.
Block 16 – The Sawtooth Star
Block 16 is the Sawtooth Star. This is a very basic and classic quilt block. It has a solid center and flying geese points.
Block 17 – Flying Geese
Block 17 is Flying Geese blocks. The block is made up of two flying geese pointed in the same direction to make the 4″ square block. This is a basic skill and has been a part of many of the quilt blocks so far.
Block 18 – Whirligigs
Block 18 is the Whirligig block. This block is super simple and is made up of 4 half square triangles that are arranged in a spiral pattern.
Block 19 – Mill Wheels
The book instructs you how to make 4 Mill Wheel blocks for number 19. This is a little more complex due to the number of pieces in the small 4×4 size. It is made with elongated flying geese, traditional flying geese units and a square in a square unit for the center.
Block 20 – Crisscross Quilt Block
Perhaps my favorite of the small blocks for the Barn Star Sampler quilt is the Crisscross block. These units have an on point look by adding triangle edges to the squares that make up the center. By making the edging triangles slightly larger than needed, the quilt block can be trimmed down to the 4.5″ unfinished size that is needed.
Wrapping up Barn Star Sampler Blocks 16-20
This is it for the individual blocks for the Barn Star Sampler. Next month I will share with you how I laid the final quilt out and pieced it together in sections to make the larger finished quilt. I can’t wait to share the finished quilt with you.
Happy quilting friends!
