Barn Star Sampler Blocks

This quilt along uses the Barn Star Sampler book by Shelley Cavanna. There are 20 different quilt blocks that I have made over the last year. Each of the blocks was repeated 2-4 times throughout the finished quilt.

The final quilt was pieced together in large sections instead of the typical rows which gives it a much more random appearance that I love.

Barn Star Sampler Fabric Selection

I am very pleased with how the final quilt came out by combining two fat quarter bundles both by Sweetwater Fabrics. The colors complemented one another well with a darker color way and a lighter color way. I added a variety of white on white prints throughout the quilt.

The Completed Barn Star Sampler Quilt

The completed quilt is quite lovely and a true sampler style quilt with so many different star quilt blocks in a unique layout. Here are a few of my favorite pictures of the quilt.

Backing the Quilt

For the backing, I chose to use a 108 wide fabric due to the finished size of the quilt being so large. I chose a grey Thatched backing that complemented the grey fabrics on the front. I also added a label from the Sweetwater Fabric subscription club for personalized labels.

Longarm Quilting

I used my typical 80/20 Quilters Dream batting to finish the quilt on my Handi Quilter Forte. I used a pantograph called Flowers Rise Again from My Creative Stitches. It is a nice swirling floral pattern that stitches out really well edge to edge.

Binding the Finished Quilt

By starting with two fat quarter bundles, I was left with a lot of scrap fabric. Instead of purchasing additional fabrics to bind the quilt I made a scrappy binding. I begin by sorting out fabrics that were at least 10 inches long but less than 18 inches that I could cut into 2.5 inch strips. I then sewed all the strips together to make the binding with diagonal bias seams.

This proved to be an efficient use of many of the scraps that I had remaining. And the scrappy binding was a nice touch for such a colorful sampler quilt.

Wrapping Up the Barn Star Sampler Quilt Along

I am so happy to be able to enjoy this quilt now that it is finished. Thank you to Fat Quarter Shop for hosting this monthly quilt along. If you haven’t yet purchased the Barn Star Sampler book, I encourage you to consider it. It has instructions for several other quilts using the various blocks that are instructed in the book. I hope to make a few additional projects in the book soon.
