Jolly Bar 5 Quilt Along – Block 1: Hatchling
It’s time to share the first block in the Jolly Bar 5 Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop, and we’re starting off strong with the Hatchling block! This cheerful design is made using just three Jolly Bar rectangles and a bit of background fabric, making it a quick and satisfying way to kick off our sampler quilt.

About the Hatchling Block
You’ll find the instructions for this block on page 18 of the Jolly Bar Book Vol. 5. This block is made up primarily of half square triangles, and the precut size of the Jolly Bars makes these easy and efficient to assemble.
The finished Hatchling block measures 16.5 inches square, making it a bold and striking addition to this sampler. I love how much movement this block has—it sets a playful tone for the rest of the quilt. The clean geometry and crisp seams really shine when paired with a beautiful mix of prints and background fabric.
My Fabric Choices
For this block, I selected three prints from the Berry & Pine collection by Lella Boutique. I chose a red tone-on-tone print, a green floral, and a colorful floral on white background print to complement the Christmas Magic Dot background fabric I’m using throughout the quilt. The contrast between the prints and the background makes each triangle pop beautifully.
The layout came together quickly thanks to the simple construction and manageable size of the half square triangles. I pressed my seams open for a flatter finish, which I think helps with alignment when these units come together.
