Blockheads 5.2 Block 3
Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2, Block 3 is the Shimmer Star designed by fabric and pattern designer April Rosenthal.
Block 3 is made with 4 patch corners, split quarter square triangle sides, and a simple pieced center.
I chose to use the white for the points of the star to really pop against my navy blue background fabric.

For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House and am making the 12 inch quilt blocks.
Moda Blockheads 5.2 Block 3 Assembly
I didn’t use any special piecing for this block aside from strip piecing the four patch corners to make them quickly and accurately. The spit quarter square triangles are made by first assembly the two smaller pieces on the straight edge and then attaching the long straight edge to the bias edge of the larger half square triangle.
When doing this, you end up with a bias edge being on the side of the square on each of the smaller pieces. This can leave the block prone to stretching, so use care when pressing and handling the block before it’s put in the final quilt.

Shimmer Star Quilt Block
The Shimmer Star quilt block came together easily with mostly straight stitching and a little bit of bias stitching with the split quarter square triangles.
Color placement on this block can be used to create high contrast for the star points or it can be mixed up to create a different look.
Moda Blockheads 5 Progress
I am so happy with how my blocks look in the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. So far I have kept my blocks from the first group until the end of Moda Blockheads 5 so that I can decide if I’d like to make 1 large project or a couple smaller ones.
If you haven’t had a chance to sew the free quilt blocks from the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along, jump right in with the second group of blocks! New blocks are released on the Moda blog on Wednesdays.
Happy quilting friends!
