This month in theĀ Piece and Quilt Sampler month 6 of theĀ Quilt Along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop, I tackled three beautiful block designs that added so much texture and variety to the project! For September, I madeĀ 4 Scrap Basket blocksĀ in the 9″ size, along withĀ 1 Rosebud blockĀ andĀ 1 Broken Dishes block, both 12″ in size. These blocks kept me busy with their intricate half-square triangles and other units, but the end results were so rewarding.

Celebrate with Quilts Book
The Celebrate with Quilts is a brand new book by Lissa Alexander and Susan Ache. Each of the 60 quilt block patterns have cutting instructions for 3 inch, 6 inch, 9 inch, and 12 inch finished quilt blocks. The assembly instructions for each block are so easy to follow either by the text or by the step-by-step pictures. I love a well written pattern, and I know if it’s done by It’s Sew Emma and Fat Quarter Shop, it’s going to be great.

Piece and Quilt Sampler Quilt Along – Month 6
The sixth month of the quilt along features three quilt blocks from the Celebrate with Quilts book. The blocks made this month were as follows:
- 4 – 9″ Scrap Basket
- 1 – 12″ Rosebud
- 1 – 12″ Broken Dishes
Using my Electric Quilt layout as a guide, I made the quilt blocks in the fabrics I already chose.
Scrap Basket Quilt Blocks
TheĀ Scrap BasketĀ is a traditional basket block that brings a charming, vintage look to any quilt. I had a lot of fun piecing these 9″ blocks together, which required a combination of half-square triangles, squares, and rectangles to form the basket shape. The block is a great way to showcase a variety of fabrics in small pieces, perfect for using up scraps while maintaining a cohesive look. The 4 Scrap Basket blocks are stitched together to make one large unit for the final quilt.
Rosebud Quilt Block
Next up is theĀ Rosebud block, which is a stunning floral-inspired design. This 12″ block is predominantly made up of half-square triangles in varying sizes, arranged in a spiral to create a beautiful flower shape. The block reminds me of a blooming rosebud, with the center spiraling outwards in delicate layers. I enjoyed selecting fabrics for this block that would give it a soft, yet striking appearance, and it came out just as I hoped!
Broken Dishes Quilt Block
Lastly, I made aĀ 12″ Broken Dishes block, which is a mix of classic quilting units. This block combines half-square triangles, flying geese units, and a square-in-a-square unit to form an eye-catching geometric pattern. Itās one of those blocks that looks complex but is surprisingly straightforward once you break down the individual components. The key to a sharp Broken Dishes block is precision when piecing those half-square triangles and flying geese units, so I took my time to make sure everything lined up correctly.
Celebrate with Quilts
I can’t emphasize enough how invaluable the “Celebrate with Quilts” book is for every quilter. The variety of block sizes it offers allows for easy substitutions in any pattern, making it perfect for adding a unique twist to your projects. The Piece and Quilt Sampler pattern is also fantastic for scrap-busting, as it makes excellent use of those tricky low-volume fabrics in your collection.
Piece and Quilt Sampler Month 6 Reflections
This monthās blocks were all about mastering those smaller units like half-square triangles and flying geese, which means lots of precise piecing! Iām excited to see how these blocks will come together with the rest of the quilt top as we move closer to finishing. Stay tuned for next monthās update as we keep piecing and quilting along!
