When I saw Fat Quarter Shop was hosting a Triangles on a Roll quilt along, I knew I had to join. I love FQS and I love Triangles on a Roll!

If you’re not familiar with Triangles on a Roll, they are a thin foundation paper that you use to sew perfect half square triangles. You can sew 2 at a time, or use a big portion of the roll to do a whole bunch!
They come in a variety of sizes and it’s important to note both “finished size” and “unfinished size” to make sure you are using the right size for your project.
Finished size is exactly what is sounds like. What size the half square triangle will be in your finished quilt.
Unfinished size is 1/2 inch bigger on both the length and the width to allow for a quarter inch seam allowance all the way around the half square triangle.
Triangles on a Roll QAL
Fat Quarter Shop has a free pattern on their blog in honor of World Wide Quilting day 2023. You can find all of the details for the quilt along and the pattern on the Fat Quarter Shop website here.
The pattern is fat-quarter friendly, so I was able to pull out a bundle of Folk Tale by Lella Boutique that I had been hanging onto waiting for the perfect quilt.
Isn’t she lovely? I use the starching method on my fabrics if possible, so I starched all of the fat quarters as well as several yards of Bella 200 and hung them on an Ikea drying rack to dry over night.
Week 1 – Center Star Block
The first block is a large center star block. The block measures 32 1/2″ x 32 1/2″ and is made up of 48 half square triangles. But using triangles on a roll makes this a breeze to get perfect half square triangles in a short time. Using a short stitch length on your machine to perforate the paper as you sew, sew on all of the dotted lines. For a complete tutorial, watch the Fat Quarter Shop video here.

Once all of my Half Square Triangles were stitched to the paper, it’s time to trim, rip the paper off, press open, and trim the dog ears. This sounds like a lot, but when you assembly line the process it actually goes pretty quickly.
Next, I assembled the block paying special attention to the orientation of my half square triangles and violĆ”! A beautiful, extra large quilt block with matched points and perfect half square triangles.
Stay tuned for week 2 when we add a border of half square triangles to this block for the Triangles on a Roll quilt along!
