Scrap Buster Quilt - You Have My Heart Quilt

I needed a scrap buster quilt. I needed more than one. The scraps were piling up from other projects that were finished and some of them had a lot of leftover fabric. When I saw that Fat Quarter Shop was sharing their ideas for Scrappy September, I was on board right away.

I’ll be sharing what I’m doing in my next few blog posts, but first up was all of the leftover Sincerely Yours fabric I had leftover from the 2021 Moda Stitch Pink quilt. I had purchased two of the quilt kits to make one for a cousin fighting breast cancer and one for myself because I loved the quilt so much. But with leftovers from two kits I had a LOT of the pink, red, and white fabrics leftover. You can see how many scraps I had below.

In my future plans, I knew I wanted to make the You Have My Heart Quilt from the Quilt Bee book by Bonnie and Camille. With all of the pinks and reds in the Sincerely Yours collection, what better way to use the scraps than for a heart quilt?

Making the Scrap Quilt

This quilt is so fast and easy to start. All of the heart pieces are 2 1/2 inch strips which makes the pattern jelly roll friendly, but it also makes it easy to cut up all of the scraps I had into strips. I cut the strips for the bottom of the heart slightly wider with the intention of trimming them to size after assembling.

There were enough strips to make 39 quilt blocks with my scraps. I could make the pattern into a king size quilt for my bed with that many blocks. This will make a nice seasonal quilt for my bed and will use up nearly all of the scraps. Win Win. I have a small amount of scraps left (you can see in the lower left of the picture below). I also have enough of the pink with small white dots to use for the binding on the quilt.

So I added in 6 yards of Beyond Bella in Steel to start. I will need about another half yard, but since it’s a basic, it’s easy to get.

Using chain piecing, I sewed 5 strips together to make the bottom of the heart. Once the bottom was pressed open, I trimmed the block down to the proper width.

After that it was just putting together the hearts with snowballed corners and adding some sashing and borders. The blocks came together so fast for me. I was actually a little surprised how fast I put together 39 quilt blocks.

The quilt is assembled in staggered columns with sashing in between the blocks. I have all of the columns assembled. Next I need to finish putting the sashing between each column and assembling them.
