The 16-Patch star is full of scrappy goodness. This quilt block would be an excellent scrap buster to make several blocks for a table topper or wall hanging.

The quilt block patterns for the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along are completely free and Moda offers the patterns in 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House and am making the 12 inch quilt blocks.

Moda Blockheads 5.2 Block 10 Assembly

While the pdf pattern is an excellent pattern, I opted to assemble my quilt block a little differently than the pattern indicates. As opposed to making 4 quadrants of a four patch plus squares and half square triangles, I assembled the entire 16-patch center in once piece. Then, instead of using half square triangles to make the star points, I opted to make flying geese star points to decrease the number of seams in my finished quilt block.

Either method works just fine, you just have to do a little quilting math to figure out what size to construct the flying geese sections. In this case it is 3.5″ x 6.5″ for the 12 inch quilt block.

This quilt block was a lot of fun to make. The scrappy center gave me the chance to use up some of the smaller scraps that have accumulated in this quilt along.

Moda Blockheads 5 Progress Recap

I am so happy with how my blocks look in the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. I have kept all of my group 1 blocks to combine with my group 2 for a larger project.

If you haven’t had a chance to sew the free quilt blocks from the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along, jump right in with the second group of blocks! New blocks are released on the Moda blog on Wednesdays.
