This week, Moda Blockheads 5 Block 4 features a scrappy quilted star. It is appropriately named the Super Scrappy Star! It was designed by Corey Yoder of Coriander quilts. She is the designer behind beautiful fabric collections like the new Peachy Keen, Sunwashed, and Beautiful Day.

Pattern of Moda Blockheads 5 Block 4
The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. Moda fabrics has split Blockheads 5 into two parts. Part 1 will be a shorter quilt along to allow for a project to be finished before the holidays. After the first of the year, the quilt along will resume with more blocks for a second project that will be larger quilt setting with the remaining blocks.
Moda Blockheads 5 Block 4 Assembly
The Super Scrappy Star block is an easy basic patchwork block. I changed piecing method to make block assembly easier for the way that I quilt. Instead of making my flying geese with the 4 at a time method that is outlined in the pattern, I opted to use 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles and use the sew and flip method to get the corners onto my flying geese. This method is faster for me, but the pattern outlines the 4-at-a-time flying geese as a great option.
You can see how I laid out the individual pieces before assembling it all together into the block to make sure I liked the look of my scrappy block. I kept the same navy blue floral fabric as part of the inside sawtooth star to blend this block with the others I have made so far.

My finished block came out with really nice points. Pressing well between each step helped immensely. I like the way the navy blue floral sets off the sawtooth star in the center.
Blockheads 5 Progress
The 12 inch quilt blocks look really good together. I am looking forward to the next few weeks and figuring out a setting option. Although, I may decide to hold onto the blocks until part 2 and make them into one larger project. Time will tell!
Until next week, happy quilting!
