Crystal Manning designed the Sparkle block. The block is made with four patch corners, that has two of the blocks also four patches. This gives the block the appearance of a chain radiating out from the center. It also has flying geese star points, and a center made up of four half square triangles arranged in a pattern almost reminiscent of a square in a square block. This is perhaps the most intricate block I’ve made so far in Blockheads 5. I will say I was relieved to be making the 12 inch version because the 6 inch version would be even more intricate with such small pieces.

The quilt block patterns for the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along are completely free and Moda offers the patterns in 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House and am making the 12 inch quilt blocks.

As I mentioned above this block has a lot of pieces. Breaking it down into steps, however, proves that there are three basic techniques used to create such an intricate looking block: four patch piecing which can easily be done with strip piecing, flying geese, and half square triangles.

Sparkle Quilt Block

The Sparkle quilt block really is a piece of art with all of the details. Making a quilt entirely out of this block would really look fantastic in my option. It would create a secondary design where the chained corners meet.

Moda Blockheads 5 Progress Recap

I am so happy with how my blocks look in the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. I have kept all of my group 1 blocks to combine with my group 2 for a larger project.
