Blockheads 5.2 Block 4
Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2, Block 4 is the Morning Star designed by Barbara Groves of Me and My Sister Designs.
Block 4 is made with flying geese sides and pieced corners. I used a bright red on red print to really let the center star design shine on this block. It gave a really pretty red outline on the star.
Download the PDF Pattern for Blockheads 5 Group 2 Block 4 HereThe quilt block patterns for the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along are completely free and Moda offers the patterns in 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House and am making the 12 inch quilt blocks.
Moda Blockheads 5.2 Block 4 Assembly
The Moda instructions for this block as well as many others includes a no waste flying geese method. I don’t typically use this way of making my flying geese, so I did a little math and made them the normal way for me. This way starts with a rectangle that measures 2.5″ by 4.5″ and attaching 2.5″ squares to each corner using the sew and flip method. This gives you a flying geese unit that measures 2 x 4 in the finished quilt block.
Morning Star Quilt Block
The Morning Star quilt block came together easily with pieced corners and 8 total flying geese units.
As with all of the star blocks we’ve had so far with Blockheads 5, color placement on this block can be used to create a completely different look.
Moda Blockheads 5 Progress
I am so happy with how my blocks look in the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. So far I have kept my blocks from the first group until the end of Moda Blockheads 5 so that I can decide if I’d like to make 1 large project or a couple smaller ones.
If you haven’t had a chance to sew the free quilt blocks from the Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along, jump right in with the second group of blocks! New blocks are released on the Moda blog on Wednesdays.
Happy quilting friends!
