Shine Bright Sampler Quilt

Sharing is caring!

The Shine Bright Sampler Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop is a fun project happening from November 2023 to October 2024. They’ve revamped the old Shine On Sampler Quilt that was originally published in The Bonnie & Camille Quilt Bee book with the new Lighthearted fabric collection by Camille Roskelley. This new coloring of an old quilt pattern creates a refreshing twist. The quilt will be a big one, with 29 blocks and a generous size of 68.5″ x 80.5″.

Preparing the Fabrics:

Before diving into sewing, I prepped all the kit fabrics by giving them a quick starch. Starching helps with handling, reduces fraying, and pre-shrinks the fabric—making it a bit easier to manage during sewing. I have starched my fabrics for a couple years now and find that my quilt blocks come together so much better and I have a lot less fraying of my fabrics.

Shine Bright Block Creation Process:

Beehive Block

The Beehive Block was the first block I tackled. I cut all of my fabric pieces for all three blocks in one go before assembling each one separately. The process for the Beehive Block was very basic with just simple squares and half square triangles to make the simple star block.

The Beehive block is made of red, pink, aqua, and grey four patch center and coordinating star points made with half square triangle blocks

The Bee’s Knees Block

Moving on to The Bee’s Knees Block, cutting and sewing the pieces one by one made the process quite straightforward. There are a lot of pieces to this block. And a lot of them are very small pieces. But the instructions in the Quilt Bee book are so well written and pictures show step by step how to assemble this more complex block. It’s fascinating to see how the design comes together slowly. I love this block so much!

The Bee's Knees Block is a quilt block with a teal background and a traditionally pieced bee shape.

Bliss Block

Lastly, the Bliss Block was a delight to work on. After so many pieces in the Bee’s Knees Block, this was a quick and easy block to make. The block being made up of all squares and rectangles with a simple layout made this one come together very quickly.

The Bliss block is made with modified four patch corners in teal and white with a grey criss cross of fabric in the center.

These initial blocks have set the pace for the Shine Bright Sampler Quilt journey. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead in this creative adventure over the next year.
