Today I’m sharing my quilt block for the Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2 Block 7, the Star Bloom quilt block! The Star Bloom quilt block is designed by the very talented Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique. I have made several quilts with Vanessa’s beautiful fabric lines. I’m especially looking forward to her upcoming Magic Dot fabric collection.

Vanessa Goertzen designed this simple yet remarkable Star Bloom quilt block. It is a nine patch quilt block with a center square surrounded by 8 square in a square blocks. The square in a square blocks are easy to make, but can be a little tricky to keep them perfectly square. It’s important to make sure that you sew the sew and flip corners on precisely lined up on the edges of the center square. Also pressing open will help maintain flat seams since there can be a lot of bulk in these blocks. Also checking to make sure that you have 1/4 inch of fabric past the points of the center star and using an accurate 1/4 inch seam will help when assembling the nine patch block.

The Star Bloom Block really shines with the secondary patterns that can be created with various color placements. As with all of the star blocks we’ve had so far with Blockheads 5, color placement on this block can be used to create a completely different look.
