What Makes “Twist and Turn” Special?

The “Twist and Turn” quilt is more than just a beautiful finished product—it’s a journey through innovative quilting techniques. Using a single Layer Cake (10″ precut fabric pack) along with some background yardage, you’ll be able to recreate this stunning design. For my sample quilt, I chose the “Freedom” Layer Cake by Sweetwater Fabric Co., which brings a charming, patriotic flair to the project.

Materials You’ll Need

  • 1 Layer Cake or 10″ stacker: A layer cake is typically 42 – 10″ squares of fabric.
  • Background yardage: This complements the Layer Cake, making the patterns pop.
  • Backing and Binding: To complete your free quilt pattern
  • Basic quilting supplies: Rotary cutter, cutting mat, sewing machine, iron, etc.

Techniques Used for the Free Layer Cake Quilt Pattern

The “Twist and Turn” quilt employs two different disappearing four patch techniques, creating two unique blocks. These techniques add a dynamic look and a sense of movement to the quilt, ensuring that no two blocks are exactly alike.

  1. First Disappearing Four Patch Technique: This method starts with a simple four patch block of half square triangle units. By slicing and rearranging the pieces, you can create a new and interesting block design.
  2. Second Disappearing Four Patch Technique: Similar to the first, but with a different layout and rearranging method, this technique gives you another unique block to add variety to your quilt.
