This week brings a nice mix of larger pieced blocks and a playful accent block that adds even more storybook charm to the quilt.
For this week, we’re making:
- Two House 2 blocks (14.5″ x 20″)
- One Balloon block
Both blocks are beginner friendly and use simple construction techniques.

House Quilt Block Overview
The House 2 blocks are larger than the first set of houses, which gives you even more space to showcase the fabrics from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection.
Each block includes a house body, roof, windows, and a door, making them a fun focal point within the quilt. Because of their size, these blocks really stand out once they’re complete.
I used different fabrics for each house, which gives each one its own personality along Cherry Tree Lane.
A Note on Cutting Directions
As I was working through these blocks, I noticed a couple small errors in the cutting directions that are worth noting before you begin:
- Piece K should be cut at (2) – 4″ x 14.5″
- Piece O should be cut at (4) – 4.5″ squares
I did reach out to Jennifer Long of Sew a Story, and she was very gracious in receiving the feedback.
Taking a moment to double check these pieces before cutting will help everything come together smoothly.
Simple Construction with a Few Stitch and Flip Corners
These house blocks are very straightforward to construct. The majority of the block is made using straight piecing, with just two stitch-and-flip corners used to create the roof shape. If you’ve been following along from Weeks 1 and 2, these techniques will feel very familiar. The larger pieces also make these blocks easy to handle and quick to sew together.

Fussy Cutting Details
Just like with the first set of house blocks, this was another great opportunity to incorporate some fussy cutting.
I used the main prints from the collection in the windows and doors, which adds so much charm to each house.
On one of my blocks, I was able to fussy cut a carousel horse into the doorway, which turned out to be such a fun detail. Little moments like this really bring the storybook feel of the quilt to life.

Balloon Quilt Block
This week also includes the Balloon block, which adds a fun, whimsical element to the quilt.
The block comes together with simple piecing and fits right in with the rest of the design. It’s a nice contrast to the structured house blocks and adds a bit of movement to the overall layout.

Week 3 Progress
With the House 2 blocks and Balloon block complete, the quilt is really starting to take shape.
At this point, you can start to see how all of the elements — lampposts, houses, and accent blocks — work together to create the Cherry Tree Lane scene.
Each week builds on the last, and this is where it really starts to feel like a full quilt.
Coming Up Next
Next week in the Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along, we’ll be working on the Kite block and the final set of house blocks.
Be sure to check back next week as we continue bringing this quilt together.

I just ordered the kit and am waiting for it to get here. I can not wait to start. However I have a question my very straight forward 9 year old told me that I can’t use the balloon block because it looks too much like a hot air balloon. He says “that’s not factual.” Do you think there is enough extra fabric in the kit to make this block look more like balloons? Or substitute the block for another kite block? Thank you so much for this sew along I can’t wait to start.
Oh for sure there is enough fabric to make the block either just balloons or another kite block! Just checking, did you order a kit from me? because I don’t see your name in my orders. Totally fine if you got it somewhere else :). Just wanted to make sure I’m not missing your order somewhere! Enjoy, it’s been a fun quilt to put together!
No I didn’t I am so sorry. I ordered it through the fabric creator because she came up in my Facebook ads. I am so sorry.
Absolutely no worries! I was just making sure I didn’t miss something 🙂
