Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along – Week 2 House Quilt Blocks

Sharing is caring!

Week 2 of the Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along is all about the House 1 quilt blocks. These cheerful blocks bring the neighborhood of Cherry Tree Lane to life and add a lot of personality to the quilt.

For this week, we’re making four house blocks, each featuring five windows and a front door.

These blocks are larger than the lamppost blocks from Week 1 and come together with all straight seams, which makes them very beginner friendly.

House Quilt Block Design

Each of the House 1 blocks represents one of the homes along Cherry Tree Lane. The design includes a pitched roof, five windows, and a door that sits in the center of the house.

Because the windows and doors are nice sized pieces, they create a perfect opportunity to fussy cut prints from the A Spoonful of Sugar fabric collection.

This was one of my favorite parts of making these blocks.

A Fun Opportunity for Fussy Cutting

The Spoonful of Sugar fabric line is full of charming illustrations inspired by Mary Poppins, and the doors and windows in these house blocks give you a great chance to highlight some of those prints.

For one of my house blocks, I centered Mary Poppins herself in the doorway, which turned out to be such a fun detail. It feels like she’s stepping right out onto Cherry Tree Lane.

If you enjoy fussy cutting, the windows are another great place to showcase small motifs from the fabric collection.

Little details like this make each house block feel unique.

Simple Piecing Makes These Blocks Come Together Quickly

One thing I really liked about these house blocks is how straightforward the construction is.

All of the seams are straight seams, and the pieces are large enough that they’re easy to handle while sewing.

After sewing the units together, the blocks quickly start to look like little houses lined up along the street.

It’s one of those moments in a quilt along where the design really starts to take shape.

Week 2 Progress

After finishing the four House 1 blocks, the neighborhood of Cherry Tree Lane is starting to grow. Seeing the lamppost blocks from last week alongside these houses makes it easier to imagine how the quilt will come together.

Each block adds another piece to the storybook scene.

Coming Up Next

Next week in the Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along, we’ll continue building the neighborhood with House 2 blocks and the Balloon block.

Be sure to check back next week as we keep sewing our way down Cherry Tree Lane.
