Meet the Cast of Characters

This Halloweenies Quilt is a playful parade of pups ready for trick-or-treating! You’ll find:

  • A witch hanging onto her broom, with a masked weenie riding in front
  • A ghost weenie floating along with a happy grin
  • A skeleton pup with bones stitched in perfect precision
  • Frankenstein and a vampire each popping out of their own pumpkins
  • And a little weenie in a bubbling cauldron, complete with green bubbles rising into the night sky

A big moon glows at the top of the quilt with bats silhouetted against it, and stars and candy details scattered throughout. Those little extras add to the atmosphere, but the real stars of the show are the characters themselves. Every block has its own attitude, and together they tell a hilarious, heart-warming Halloween story.

Custom Quilting on the Halloweenies Quilt

For the quilting, I challenged myself to try custom computerized quilting for the first time. Using my ProStitcher software, I cropped out sections of each block and filled them with different motifs that complemented the shapes and movement in the design.

Then I ran an edge-to-edge design on the blue background, carefully cropping around each character as I went. It was tedious and intense work—lots of zooming, clicking, and testing—but absolutely worth the effort! I learned so much about the capabilities of my long arm software, and the finished texture gives every dog its own dimension and personality.

When the quilt was finished, it became an instant hit—first at a pop-up shop and now as a display at my local quilt shop. The details, colors, and cleverness of each character stop people in their tracks every time.

Making the Matching Halloweenies Bench Pillow

To make a coordinating accent piece, I used leftover fabrics and blocks from the quilt to create a matching bench pillow. I took the skeleton and ghost weenies from the Halloweenies Quilt and faced them toward each other, adding a 6-inch strip between them. After measuring my pillow form, I added extra fabric to each end to reach the correct width and height.

Borders were added to the top and bottom to give the pillow enough height, and then I quilted it on my long arm. I outlined the dogs with gentle straight lines and added an edge-to-edge design to just the blue background for texture.

To finish, I used an envelope back trimmed with binding for a polished look. When flipped right-side-out, the dogs’ tails wrap perfectly around to the back—a detail that makes me smile every time I see it on the bench!
