About the Scattered Stars Block

You’ll find the Scattered Stars block on page 54 of the Jolly Bar Book Vol. 5. This block finishes at a generous 32.5 inches square, making it the centerpiece of the quilt. It’s assembled with nine Jolly Bar rectangles and background fabric.

This block combines half square triangles with large background squares, all arranged in a clean, radiating star layout. The scale of this block really lets the prints shine and adds a bold focal point to the sampler.

My Fabric Choices

For this large-scale block, I selected nine prints from the Berry & Pine collection by Lella Boutique, again pulling from a balanced range of reds, darker greens, lighter greens, and low volume prints. With so much space to work with, I made sure to vary the tones and values to keep the block visually interesting from edge to edge.

The background fabric remains the Christmas Magic Dot by Lella Boutique. Its subtle dot pattern adds texture without distracting from the large star layout.

While it’s a larger block to piece, the techniques are straightforward. I took my time sewing and trimming the half square triangles, then carefully laid everything out before assembling to make sure the star pattern aligned properly. The results are well worth the effort—this block is definitely a highlight in the quilt!

That’s it for Block 5 of the Jolly Bar 5 Quilt Along, and this Scattered Stars block really earns its name—it’s big, bold, and beautifully festive. I love how much presence it brings to the quilt layout.
