Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2 Block 1
It’s time for Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2! This is the kick off of the second phase of Blockheads 5. If you missed it, at the end of 2023, Moda Fabrics released 9 quilt block patterns (plus one bonus block!) to be used in a smaller project that would be wrapped up before the end of the year. Now that it’s officially 2024, the second phase has begun! This phase will be longer and have more quilt block patterns than the first phase.

Moda Blockheads 5 is a completely free quilt along hosted by Moda Fabrics and their amazing designers and team. So let’s get into it with block 1 of the second phase!

Blockheads 5.2 Block 1
Moda Blockheads 5 Group 2, Block 1 is the Dream Big block designed by Sherri McConnell. Sherri also designed a quilt block for the first group of blocks. Sherri is one of my favorite quilt bloggers, designers, podcasters, and YouTubers out there in the quilt world. If you don’t follow her and her daughter Chelsi on YouTube, go give them a follow! They are suuuuuuuper close to having 100,000 followers over there!
The Moda Blockheads 5 quilt along offers patterns in 2 different block sizes: 12 inch and 6 inch. For this quilt along I am using Songbook fabrics by Fancy That Design House.
Moda Blockheads 5.2 Block 1 Assembly
The Dream Big star block is made using several basic quilt techniques: Flying Geese, Half Square Triangles, and Square in a Square.

The four corners of this block is made with a four patch of two squares and two half square triangles each. The sides are assembled with two coordinating flying geese sewn together. And it is completed with a square in a square block for the center.
Playing with color placement can really change the look of this block. Moda provides some block outlines you can color at the bottom of the pattern. Give it a try to see which color placement you prefer for your fabrics!
Dream Big Star
This Dream Big quilt block is a really great block to play with. Practicing the basics of block construction will help you become a more confident quilter. I think this block would look really great as a full quilt of the same block with sashing between the blocks as well.
Moda Blockheads 5 Progress
I am so happy with how my blocks look in the Songbook collection by Fancy That Design House. So far I have kept my blocks from the first group until the end of Moda Blockheads 5 so that I can decide if I’d like to make 1 large project or a couple smaller ones.
