It’s time the Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery month 12 block. Each month, participants receive a package of fabric and a quilt pattern for the block of the month from Fat Quarter Shop. Every month’s block is designed by a different quilter in the industry. This month is the final month of the 2023 Designer Mystery Quilt. The quilt block is the Aster block designed by Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings.

Designer Mystery Month 12 – The Aster Block

Extra Quilt Blocks

This year, to help use up the extra fabric from the Designer Mystery kit, Fat Quarter Shop has provided cutting instructions for additional block sizes each month. The dedicated Designer Mystery Facebook page has cutting instructions for a 6″ and 3″ block. So far I’ve been able to make both of the extra sizes and STILL have extra fabric every month. Each month before making the quilt blocks, I pull out any scraps of the same print I have left from previous months. This way I’m making efficient use of any leftovers. This will leave me with the larger pieces as leftovers at the end of the quilt along.

The smaller blocks this month were quite challenging, especially the 3″ quilt block as the corner pieces were just 1/4″ squares in the finished piece. The seams were quite bulky in some places. Trimming them down to less than 1/4″ seams could be helpful if having trouble with pressing. Even without extra trimming however, I was able to get a pretty accurate mini quilt block.
