It’s hard to believe we’re already at Month 6 of the Moonbeams Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop! This month marks a significant milestone as I completed the final finishing blocks and assembled the entire quilt top with all the blocks I’ve made so far. It’s incredibly rewarding to see all the quilt blocks come together so perfectly in a stunning finished piece. Keep reading for a link to the free block patterns/finishing instructions for this month’s blocks!

Have you heard of the Moonbeams Quilt Along? It is this year’s charity quilt along by Fat Quarter Shop to raise funds for Make A Wish! Every year, Fat Quarter Shop hosts a charity quilt along by giving away a free pattern each month to make a stunning final quilt. In an effort to raise funds for Make a Wish, however, Fat Quarter Shop does ask for a donation there in lieu of payment for the pattern.
This year, the Moonbeams quilt, was designed to use the Strawberry Lemonade fabric collection by Sherri and Chelsi. There is a quilt kit to accompany the quilt along that comes in a stunning storage box. Strawberry Lemonade is a beautiful fabric collection that has been very popular with quilters. However, this quilt can be made with any fabric collection, or even scraps from your stash!
Moonbeams Month 6 – Finishing Blocks and Piecing the Quilt Top
To finish the Moonbeams quilt top, I needed to make 30 square-in-a-square quilt blocks with various prints from the kit surrounded by the navy background print. Square in a square blocks are created by adding sew and flip corners to the four corners of the center square block: trimming and flipping as you go. The result is a square on point in the center and a new quilt square unit created with the background fabrics.
Once all the blocks were completed, it was time to assemble the quilt top. I laid out all the blocks on my design wall to get a sense of the overall layout and color balance. Following the free pdf pattern from Fat Quarter Shop, I laid out the blocks and began sewing them together. The quilt top turned out beautifully, with each block contributing to the overall sampler style design.

Moonbeams – Companion Cross Stitch
Since I completed the cross stitch last month, I decided to fully finish it for this month’s blog post. I purchased the Grey Wooden Primose Cross Stitch Display from Fat Quarter Shop. This is the wooden piece that they used to finish their completed Moonbeams cross stitch as well. I used the aqua Chelsea’s Checks fabric for my first backing and the white and red Stitching Housewive’s Stripes for the second layer. I use Sticky Board for all of my mounting and a Surebonder glue gun. I do wish I would have made my stripe layer just slightly smaller, but it’s ok for now. I do plan to add a ribbon bow in some way but didn’t have a ribbon that I liked in my stash, so I will add that at a later date.
