Some quilts are just fabric and thread. And some quilts hold an entirely new season of life inside them.

This Aviator quilt is for my very first grandbaby — a sweet little grandson who is due next month — and we are beyond excited.

Fabric Choice – High Flight by Sariditty

When I saw the High Flight collection by Sariditty, I knew immediately it was perfect.

Airplane fabrics can easily lean juvenile, but this collection absolutely does not. The color palette is refined and thoughtful, and the prints are clever without feeling cartoonish.

There are flight maps, log book pages, aviation principles, subtle coordinates, and beautifully illustrated airplanes. It’s playful but elevated — exactly what I wanted for something he can grow into.

Pattern – Aviator Quilt by Lella Boutique

I paired the collection with the Aviator pattern by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique.

The original pattern includes 16 large airplane blocks, but I chose to make mine slightly smaller. Instead of a 4×4 layout, I made 9 blocks arranged 3×3.

Each block finishes at approximately 16″ x 19″, which brought my finished quilt size to 48″ x 57″

I love this size for a baby quilt — large enough to grow with him but still cozy and manageable.

Backing & Binding

For the backing, I used the large navy flight map print from the High Flight collection. It makes such a statement and ties the entire aviation theme together in the best way.

The binding is a light blue swirl print from the collection, which softens the edges and keeps everything cohesive without competing with the airplanes.

Quilting – Propel Pantograph

I quilted this one on my longarm using the Propel pantograph by Longarm League.

The movement in this design feels perfect for an aviation quilt — subtle directional motion that complements the airplanes without overpowering the piecing.

It adds texture while keeping the quilt soft and snuggly for baby use.

An Aviator Quilt for My First Grandson

There is something incredibly special about making a quilt for your own grandchild.

I’ve made so many quilts over the years — for customers, for shop samples, for blog posts, for classes — but this one felt different from the very first cut.

Every block felt like anticipation.
Every seam felt like a countdown.

I cannot wait to see this quilt wrapped around him.

This Aviator quilt is more than a project finish — it’s the beginning of a new chapter for our family.

And I’m so grateful I get to stitch a little piece of that story into fabric.
