It’s time for the second month of the Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery Quilt Along. Each month, participants receive a package of fabric and a quilt pattern for the block of the month from Fat Quarter Shop. Each month’s block is designed by a different quilter in the industry. This month is the Magnolia quilt block designed by Sherri & Chelsi. Sherry has a beautiful quilt blog over at A Quilting Life.

This year’s Designer Mystery quilt features the Sunnyside fabric collection by Camille Roskelley. The fabric collection is so pretty.
This month’s block uses flying geese blocks and a variation of a nine-patch quilt block for the four corners. Overall, the piecing of this quilt block is very simple. Paying careful attention to your cutting and sewing directly across the points of the flying geese will improve your piecing accuracy on this block.
Extra Quilt Blocks
The amount of extra fabric was generous again this month (as always with Fat Quarter Shop kits) and the dedicated Designer Mystery Facebook page has cutting instructions for a 6″ and 3″ block as well. Making these smaller blocks as well as the 12″ quilt block that is used for the final quilt adds a little bit of variety to this year’s Designer Mystery Quilt. The intricacy of the small 3.5″ unfinished blocks takes a lot of patience and careful pinning to keep you from losing your points on the flying geese. The tiny blue squares in the corner sections are so stinking cute. I pressed open a majority of the seams on the smaller two blocks to allow them to lay flatter, but followed the pressing instructions for the 12″ block from the pattern.
I love the way that the first two blocks are looking together. The finishing kit was delayed but should be shipped next month with the block 3 release. I’m looking forward to working ahead to make the finishing blocks. By doing them in advance over the course of the year, it helps me finish the quilt more quickly when the final block is released.

Happy Quilting!
