Sharing is caring!

Week 4 of the Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along brings in a fun mix of blocks with the Kite block and the final set of House 3 quilt blocks.

For this week, we’re making:

  • One Kite block
  • Two House 3 blocks (with additional kite units above each house)

Between the main kite block and the kites above the houses, I ended up making five kite units total.

This week adds a little bit of a challenge compared to previous blocks, but everything is still very manageable with a bit of patience.

Kite Quilt Block Overview

The kite units are what really stand out this week. They add movement and a playful, storybook feel to the quilt that fits perfectly with the Cherry Tree Lane theme.

These blocks are made using half rectangle triangle units, which is a slightly different technique than we’ve used so far in the quilt along.

Working with Half Rectangle Units

The kite units were a little trickier than the blocks from previous weeks.

They use half rectangle units that need to be:

  • Sewn in the correct orientation (left vs right matters)
  • Trimmed to size using a template

If you’re new to this technique, I would definitely recommend:

  • Making a test unit with scrap fabric first
  • Double checking whether you’re sewing a left or right unit
  • Taking your time during the trimming step

There is also a video linked in the pattern, which is very helpful for visualizing the process.

Finished Is Better Than Perfect

I’ll be honest — I’m not 100% satisfied with how all of my kite units turned out.

Some of my seams don’t line up perfectly, especially where the angles come together.

But this is one of those moments where finished is better than perfect.

When you step back and look at the block as a whole, those small imperfections are barely noticeable. And once the quilt is quilted and finished, no one else is going to see those little mismatches.

These blocks are a good reminder to keep moving forward and not get stuck chasing perfection.

House 3 Quilt Blocks

The House 3 blocks continue building out the neighborhood with another variation of the house design. Each of these houses have a window and door, a cute chimney on top and a kite blowing in the breeze above.

Just like the previous house blocks, these are constructed with straight piecing, making them very beginner friendly.

Fussy Cutting Details

The window and door in these blocks are another great opportunity for fussy cutting.

I used prints from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection to add detail and personality to each house.

These small touches help carry the storybook theme throughout the quilt and make each block feel a little unique.

Week 4 Progress

With the Kite block and House 3 blocks complete, all of the main block elements for the quilt are finished.

At this point, you can really see how everything is going to come together — the lampposts, houses, kites, and panel all working together to create the Cherry Tree Lane scene.

Coming Up Next

Next week in the Cherry Tree Lane Quilt Along, we’ll move on to sashing and finishing the quilt top.

This is where everything starts to come together into a full quilt layout.
