Designer Mystery 2024 Month 11 Quilt Along: Family Time

Sharing is caring!

We’re nearing the end of the Designer Mystery Quilt-Along, and Month 11 brings us a bold and striking block—Family Time, designed by Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings. This month’s design is all about flying geese, and lots of them! I continued using my My Summer House fabric collection and am still piecing the rows together as I go, so the quilt top is almost complete.

The Family Time Block

This block is made up of 32 flying geese, and to keep everything crisp and accurate, I used 1.5 x 3 inch foundation paper from Fat Quarter Shop. It made a huge difference in ensuring each goose was perfectly aligned—especially since the layout is so symmetrical and graphic. The block is divided into four identical units of 8 flying geese (2 wide by 4 high), and each of these units is rotated 90 degrees around the center.

One of my favorite details is how the red flying geese meet in the center to create a pinwheel. The contrast with the surrounding blue flying geese makes that central pinwheel pop beautifully. It’s a simple color choice with a powerful effect. This block might look intense, but it was incredibly satisfying to put together—especially with the help of foundation paper.

Tips for Month 11’s Block

  • Use foundation paper for flying geese to keep every point precise—it’s especially helpful when sewing large quantities like this.
  • Lay out all four flying geese sections before sewing to double-check color placement and orientation.
  • Press seams carefully to reduce bulk where the geese points meet in the center pinwheel.
  • Chain piecing the geese, if using the traditional piecing method, helps speed up the process and keep your pieces organized.
