Coffee Mug Quilt Made with Morning Latte Fabric

Sharing is caring!

Some quilts are made for beds, some are made for cuddling on the couch, and some are simply meant to add a little personality to your home. The Mug Collection Quilt definitely falls into that last category.

This small quilt finishes at 34½” x 34½”, making it the perfect size for decorating a coffee bar, styling on a small table, or even hanging on the wall in a kitchen or breakfast nook. It’s one of those projects that adds warmth to a space without overwhelming it.

I made this version using the Morning Latte fabric collection by Sandy Gervais, and the fabrics could not be more perfect for a quilt inspired by cozy mornings and coffee breaks.

The Morning Latte Fabric Collection

The Morning Latte collection by Sandy Gervais for Riley Blake Designs has such a comforting, welcoming feel to it. The prints include soft florals, warm neutrals, and subtle coffee-inspired designs that feel playful without being overly themed.

What I especially love about this collection is that it still feels timeless. It works beautifully in kitchens, dining areas, and anywhere you want that relaxed, homey vibe. The color palette leans into warm reds, creams, and soft tones that pair perfectly with wood accents, coffee bars, and everyday décor.

When I saw these fabrics together, a quilt featuring coffee mugs just felt like the obvious choice.

The Mug Collection Quilt Design

The quilt itself is made up of nine coffee mug blocks, each one pieced using a variety of prints from the Morning Latte collection. The different fabrics give each mug its own personality while still keeping the overall quilt cohesive.

To add a little extra visual interest, the mug blocks feature three different center block variations that repeat across the quilt. That small change keeps the design from feeling too repetitive and adds just enough detail to make the quilt fun to look at up close.

The quilt is finished with a dimensional border that frames the blocks nicely and helps the design feel complete. It gives the quilt a bit of depth and draws your eye back toward the center mug blocks.

Small Pieces, Beginner-Friendly Techniques

While the quilt isn’t large, the pieces in the mug blocks are fairly small, which means accuracy really helps everything come together nicely. The techniques themselves are very approachable though, making this a great project for confident beginners who want to practice piecing smaller units.

One thing I definitely recommend when working with the smaller pieces in this quilt is starching your fabric before cutting. A little bit of starch helps stabilize the fabric and makes the smaller pieces much easier to handle while sewing.

Taking that extra step at the beginning can make the piecing process smoother and help keep everything nice and precise.

A Perfectly Coordinated Backing

For the backing, I used the cheater print from the Morning Latte collection, which was an easy way to tie the whole quilt together. Cheater prints are one of my favorite tricks when making smaller quilts like this because they give the back of the quilt a lot of visual interest without any extra piecing.

It coordinates beautifully with the fabrics on the front and keeps the whole quilt feeling cohesive from front to back.

The Mug Collection Quilt Kit

Because I loved how this quilt turned out, I decided to offer it as a quilt kit in my shop.

The Mug Collection Quilt Kit includes the pattern along with all of the fabric needed for the quilt top and binding, featuring the Morning Latte fabric collection by Sandy Gervais. Backing fabric is not included so you can choose something that works best for your space or personal style.

If you enjoy decorating your kitchen or coffee bar with quilts, this one is such a fun addition. It also makes a thoughtful gift for the coffee lover in your life.

Decorating with the Mug Collection Quilt

Quilts aren’t just for beds, and this one is a great example of how quilts can be part of everyday décor. A small quilt like this can instantly soften a space and add personality to areas that might otherwise feel purely functional.

I can easily imagine it styled on a coffee bar with a tray of mugs, a small plant, and maybe a favorite bag of coffee nearby. It would also look charming hung on the wall in a breakfast nook or kitchen corner.

However you display it, the Mug Collection Quilt brings a little extra warmth to the space.

Final Thoughts

The Mug Collection Quilt is cozy without feeling overly themed, and the Morning Latte fabrics give it that relaxed, welcoming feel that fits so well in a kitchen or coffee nook.

With its 34.5″ x 34.5″ finished size, it’s a manageable project that still makes a statement. Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a gift, it’s the kind of quilt that’s both fun to sew and easy to enjoy once it’s finished.

And if you love the fabrics as much as I do, the Mug Collection Quilt Kit is available in my shop while supplies last.
