Every once in a while, a quilt comes along that is just plain fun to make from beginning to end. Sew Place Like Home by Art East Quilting Co. was exactly that kind of project.

If you’re a fan of The Wizard of Oz, this quilt is full of charming details. Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Flying Monkeys, the Emerald City, and even the Kansas tornado all come together to tell the story one block at a time.

When Art East announced this as a sew along, I knew I wanted to join.

The Exclusive Sew Along Kit

Although this was organized as a sew along, participants weren’t waiting each week for new pattern releases. The exclusive kit included the complete pattern along with all of the fabric needed to make the quilt, so you could sew at whatever pace worked for you.

Life was busy while this sew along was happening, so I definitely didn’t keep up with the suggested schedule. Instead, I worked on blocks whenever I had time, often jumping ahead whenever I found a free afternoon.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was Art East’s Circle community. It was so much fun dropping in to see everyone else’s progress and watching the same pattern come to life in so many different ways.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Art East Patterns

I’ve made quite a few Art East Quilting Co. patterns over the years, and they continue to be some of my favorites.

If I had to pick just one favorite, 100 Acre Wood still takes the top spot simply because I’ve loved Winnie the Pooh for as long as I can remember. But Sew Place Like Home is definitely near the top of the list.

What keeps bringing me back isn’t just the subjects—they create some of the most unique quilt patterns I’ve ever made.

The real challenge isn’t complicated construction—it’s staying organized. There are a lot of pieces to cut, but the patterns are exceptionally well written. Whether you prefer detailed written instructions or clear step-by-step illustrations, Art East does an excellent job of guiding you through every block.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the finished quilt, I found it much easier to think of it as a series of smaller projects. Each block became its own little accomplishment, and before I knew it, the entire story had come together.

Tula Pink True Colors & Grayworks Were the Perfect Choice

The original Sew Place Like Home pattern was designed using solids, but the exclusive sew along kit featured Tula Pink’s True Colors and Graywork collections.

I purchased the kit directly from Art East because I loved the fabric selection.

My favorite prints from the collection were the On the Grid prints from True Colors. The colors are incredibly vibrant, and the classic diagonal grid adds texture without competing with the piecing. They’re one of those prints that somehow manage to be both modern and timeless.

The Grayworks collection was equally perfect for this quilt. The variety of gray prints added just enough movement and texture to the tornado and the Tin Man while still reading as gray from a distance.

It’s one of those fabric combinations that makes you appreciate how much thoughtful fabric selection can change an entire quilt.

Quilting the Finished Quilt

Once the quilt top was finished, I knew I wanted the quilting to complement the design instead of competing with it.

I chose Echoed Circles by Long Arm League for the quilting.

The swirling design immediately reminded me of everything that makes The Wizard of Oz so memorable—the Kansas wind, the tornado carrying Dorothy to Oz, the clouds drifting across the sky, and the whimsical feeling of the entire story.

The quilting adds beautiful texture across the quilt without distracting from the pieced blocks. From across the room, your eye is drawn to the characters first. As you move closer, the quilting becomes another layer of interest.

For the backing, I chose Black Dapple Dot. The subtle dots add just enough texture while letting the quilting really stand out.

Would I Recommend This Pattern?

Absolutely.

If you’re an adventurous beginner who is comfortable with accurate cutting and basic quilting techniques, I think you can absolutely make this quilt.

Don’t let the finished design intimidate you.

Take it one block at a time.

Each block uses familiar techniques, and because every block is different, the quilt never becomes repetitive. Every time you finish a block, you get the satisfaction of seeing another piece of the Wizard of Oz story come to life.

There are quite a few smaller pieces throughout the quilt, and a little starch makes those pieces much easier to handle while improving accuracy. It’s a small step that pays off throughout the entire project.

Final Stitches

Sew Place Like Home is one of those quilts that kept me excited from the first cut to the final stitch on the binding. Every block introduced a new character or scene, so there was always something new waiting on my design wall.

That’s one of the things I love most about Art East Quilting Co. patterns. They don’t just create quilts—they create experiences.

If you’re looking for a quilt that’s packed with personality, tells a story, and challenges you in all the right ways without relying on difficult techniques, I can’t recommend this pattern enough.
